When it comes to postage costs for distributing publications, and other direct mail materials, size really does matter. And in more ways than one!
Shape and thickness
The size of the package itself is just one of those ways. Royal Mail introduced charges for handling letters and packages based on the shape and thickness in 2006.
To get the best postage rates, it’s recommended that letters stay within the limits shown below:

For parcels (or packages), the following dimensions are recommended. It’s worth noting that we don’t handle parcels.

Weight
As well as the size and shape, the weight of the mail pack is important. ‘Letters’ are restricted to a maximum weight of 100g, while ‘Large Letters’ must be no heavier than 750g. Mail packs that exceed those weight (and size) restrictions, even by just a fraction, will incur additional fees which can really impact on the overall cost per pack. And if your subscriber list is large, that cost can be seriously significant.
Volume
That brings us nicely onto volume. While we can deliver huge discounts on postage rates for any volume, the more packs you send, the cheaper the postage, per unit.
That said, there’s nothing more costly than distributing 100,000 mail packs to subscribers, for example, only to find that 10% of those are classed as Gone Away, Deceased, or duplicates even.
